This image (taken from YouTube) shows the popularity of the music video from our chosen track on YouTube by age.

This Image confirms that the video and track is most popular with the younger audience, males in particular. Meaning it would make sense to aim our video at the same age group and gender.

00:06 But I'm thinking what's the harm 00:08
00:09 With a bit of rhetoric and charm 00:11
00:12 But I can't quite comprehend 00:14

music video analysis

Pendulum – Witchcraft

Pendulum use amplification for their song witchcraft because when, it says eye at the beginning of the video there is close up shot of someone’s eye. At 25 seconds there is the first shot of the meat, but it is slightly distorted, and the effects make iit so you can see a clear shot of him. When the singer says “ a snapshot from where you were born “ it goes through a montage and shows baby pictures of babies it then stops and goes into pictures of a hand. When the male singer says “hand” this is another bit of amplification.
At 41 seconds we can see a medium shot of an electric guitar, the effect that is related to this is two flashes of yellow light on the screen this is expected with the types of music, The drums come on screen when the drums kick in and produce quite fast movements with the drumstick which implies the beat is picking up. The person with the electric guitar seems to be wearing a long trench coat or coat, which could link to that rock hysteria. At 45 seconds amplification becomes present again.
A woman being uplifted into the air represents this. Just after the woman is raised up there a fast paced cuts and shots to show the pickup of pace in the song, the bubbles show where the song changes note by splashing. Round about 2:18 strobe lights come into play which is what we would expect to see in this type of genre’s music video. At 3:00 we get a first shot of the band all together because in previous parts it has been the band separated, even though this music video is particularly focusing on the meat when it comes to the band members, we rarely get a clear shot of his face it is also distorted or has some kind of effect that makes him look different, this could be because he is shy, which is what you wouldn’t expect in a music video with this genre. The last thirty seconds is constant strobe lights and fast cuts, to show the pace of the song.

City and Colour – Save Your Scissors

The first shot of this music video is an establishing shot; it then skips into the house where it gives us a long shot of the meat, playing an acoustic guitar. It gradually gets closer until about 14 -15 seconds where it stops it then jumps to a closer shot at about 18 seconds. The mise en scene for the meat looks to be quite poor and or bland, this can be portrayed by the colour of the walls or the attire he is wearing.
At about twenty two seconds it zooms in for a close up shot of the meat, to sow him singing and playing the guitar. It shows us a close up of his hands while he is playing this could be to show people that he actually plays his music and or to show people what chords or notes he plays. This is popular with the type of rock genre/acoustics.
At 41 seconds it shows the meat getting up, and packing his equipment, it then proceeds to show us locations pinned on a map, these pins could represent places they are to travel to or places he is touring two or has already done so.
From 45 seconds he starts tuning his guitar, which shows that he is able to play, and has a certain amount of skill, after this we get a close up shot of the neck of the guitar while he is playing, to show that he is using a different guitar.
At 55 seconds the concept of him using another guitar which is electric is confirmed with a shallow depth of field which shows the guitar in focus and the meat not. At 1 minute and 7 seconds it shows that he is playing another instrument which makes him versatile, also the plaster for when he is playing his guitar, and the tattoo on his knuckles which how that the essence of rock is there. At about 1 minute 15 secs he heads out of his house towards the car, it is as if the person behind the camera is like a person prying on the meat, the meat seems to be quite shy as when there is a shot of him it’s never right in front of his face. At 1 minute 40 secs he is walking upstairs to a band practice, he seems to be the person who gives the actions, this band looks like a heavy metal band or screamo, we can portray this by the amount of tattoo’s each one has and the type. In this video the lyrics don’t necessarily go along side with video. This video is slowly edited to match the beat of the son, however when the beat changes it doesn’t always change to a different part.

digipak analysis

Images Used - the image of "The Beatles" are in the center of the advert with the text above, which represents that the image underneath is the "The Beatles" The Beatles Albums are located at the bottom of the advert since it is a advert to show that the albums have been remastered, which is why they are also in colour, they are also in colour so you can distinguish albums. A apple in the right hand corner signifies "The Beatles" label, but until 2010 "The Beatles" weren't available to download on itunes, because of the class of names. The style is a classic and simple layout.

Text - A large size Bootle font, to display the name of "The Beatles" This font is recognized world wide because this is the font the band uses one all their products, Also this is a way the band is recognized. The colour of the bands name "The Beatles" is near enough the only colour on this advertisement, because it is trying to attract people to the advert, it also makes the advert pop.

The relationship between the image of "The Beatles" and the text goes well, because when the font Bootle is used you expect it to be related to "The Beatles" Also the information is in a smaller font and also looks like Times New Roman, and it is near enough the same colour as the background of the advert just a bit darker, which is good because it helps the other information stand out. Also the remastered and the rediscovered goes well with the the pictures of the albums, and also the in stores now relates as well because it shows a promotes where you can get it.

The iconography of this image shows a general representation of the band, at this period in time, even though this wasn't produced when they were still " The Beatles"

The only signifier's in this video are the Apple in the right hand corner and the font which displays the bands name.

We know that "The Beatles" are mainstream because of the infamy they have/ had, but from the advertisement we can tell that "The Beatles" are aimed at a mainstream audience because of the logo for EMI a well known production company which produces vast's amount of music in loads of different genre's.

shot count

The first half of the video takes place in a convertible, where the band members are partying which takes them around the town, when the second half of the video is introduced they are cavorting in a bar where each of the band members portrays several different characters. Billie Joe Armstrong plays the mentioned representative of California, two fighting clients, a punk rocker and a nerd. Tré Cool plays a drunken priest, an arrested patron, and a prostitute. Mike Dirnt plays the barman and a policeman. There are also scenes featuring seemingly worn-down dancers. At the end of the video, the car smokes to a halt in the field that the song "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" starts. The video for "holiday" and "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams". The genre for this music video can be put into a few categories. The first one could be Classic Rock - Rock, it could b e placed in this category because of the way they play. However it could also be placed in the punk genre because of the way he sings some bits, and also because it is a statement for anti - war. The audience would be anyone who genrally like's Rock based music. The Mise En Scene, shows the type of music it should be classed in. First off you have Billie Joe Armstrongs black nail varnish, which has gothic connotations, and therefore can be placed in the Rock or punk genre also it shows rebelion because it is a male wearing what usually is worn by females. Also the eyeliner and the suits of the band members are quite dark which also suggest that gothic and rock influence.

digipak analysis

Images Used - Two Hands, Clear Sky with Clouds, Tribal patterns.
Text Used - Looks like Hawaii Killer for the bands name " I Killed The Prom Queen" it is positioned in the center of the image, this is to display the bands name, it also is overlapped over the two hands grasping at each other the font size looks to be a medium font size of about 24. The font for some information looks to be in the font Times New Roman, "music is for the recently deceased" it also looks like it is in a smallish font about size 12 - 18.

The relationship between the text and images on this digi pack fit together quite well and it suits the bands name, one hand could represent one reaching down from the afterlife and the other could represent one from the living world. This is why the name of the band "I Killed The Prom Queen" goes along with the image, because one hand could be the person who killed the prom queen and the other could be the dead prom queen.

The iconography of the digi packs font fits in extremely well with the bands genre, because the font is quite dark, Gothic. Whereas the music produced by this band is heavy.

This album cover seems to be underground because of the type of music the band produces, his could also be there first album cover, however i doubt that it is there first album cover because of how it is put together.

This digi pack is seem to focus on the target audience of people who would like rock, and the way it is established as rock or is somewhat located in the rock genre is displayed by the Gothic font.

Skills audit

digital technology-
what equipment/ software packages did you use to produce your production?
we used final cut, photoshop, imovie, live type, wix, a digital camera and macs to edit.
how did these skills contribute to the creation of your production?
we used a blurry effect in final cut to create tension and confusion when the killer was in shot. we also used live type to create the opening title.
how will you develop these skills during the A2 project?
i will use more effects to create more of a feel, i will also use more shots to give a better feel to the video.

research and planning
what tasks did you complete when preparing to film your sequence?
genre conventions mind map, genre history research, initial ideas, institution research, title sequenced timeline, nine screen analysis of and opening sequence, pitch, call sheet, storyboard and animatic. We filmed before the due deadlines. next year i plan to do more research and more planning.

using conventions of real media texts-
which texts did you analyse?
we analysed the texas chainsaw massacre, i spit on your grave, blair witch project and shrooms. we followed the conventions and used a lack of knowledge to build up tension. this year we will challenge the conventions
